Another Article.

And Assaf Razon sent this article to me after my rant/comparison of the show biz and high tech worlds.
I read through page one, which was nice to read.
Can someone summerize me the rest ?

Last posts’s article

I’ve actually read last posts’s article.
There’s a passage there that reminded me a chat with Amnon on the subject of games:

A lot of people tell me: “I’ve got a great idea for a game.” Frankly, who gives a crap? A great idea is meaningless. A great idea that leverages your existing technology, gets the team excited, is feasible to do on time and budget, is commericially competitive, and, last but not least, floats the boat of a major publisher… Now you have something.

I had the EXACT same thing with Amnon, only he got REALLY MAD when I told him you have an idea for a game ? … so ?

And another passage which i’m also sure i said some time:

The best part of my job is nerdy dream fulfillment. When I was a kid, reruns of the original Star Trek used come on at 6:00pm on channel 11. The thing I loved about that show was the feeling of how cool it would be to work with a group of people who were absolutely experts at what they do, who could constantly surprise you with their creativity and resourcefulness. Also, I wanted to have sex with that green chick.

Another thing that worries me:
Persistence and enthusiasm mean a lot in the game industry. So if you get knocked down once, just get back up and try again. You’ll get noticed.

Got knocked once, tried again. No one notices

I must also have another link added to the long list of links from last post:

The Inspiracy
Noah Falstein (Jewish ?) was one of the briliant minds in the good old LucasArts games.
I wonder if he’s still in touch with Ron Gilbert.
He designed many of the LucasArts games like Indiana Jones, and Monkey Island, The Dig, Day of the tentacle, and more…
His site has a lot of interserting stuff to read in regards to game design.

Computer Game Design.

Amnon sent me this link.
For an article in Gamespot. Which i didn’t read because i thought it
was too long and too uninteresting because all the people who are
written about in the article made games that sucked.
this lead to an argument which concluded in me sending him a list of stuff i DO find interesting.
I decided to post it here because it might be of some use to someone.

But first some of the argument itself:
Oded:
>>>your point being ?
>>they made games that SUCKED.
>>i prefer to read Ron Gilbert’s insights any day.
>>
>>oded

Amnon:
> My point being: thought you might be interested.
> Was wrong.
> Life goes on.
>
> P.S. Wouldn’t you rather working on games that suck
> rather then storage that blows?
>

Oded:
Honestly ?
No.
I don’t think so.
Perhaps.
But if Majorem thought me anything, is that the answer to this question isn’t “YES!!”.
If it would have been, I’d already be working on some cellular phone games.
But it’s like programming utilities. It sucks.

If we’re on a subject of interesting things to read :

Much better article, from the same site, by better people:
http://www.gamespot.com/features/6120427/index.html
http://www.adventuregamers.com/newsitem.php?id=944

And another:
http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,318

And another:
http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,142

And yet, Another:
http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,325

And if you didn’t read this yet:
http://grumpygamer.com/adventuregames

I’m sure there are TONS of articles about game design here:
http://www.gamedev.net/
or here:
http://gamasutra.com/

and yes, i frequent this page weekly:
http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/jobs_display.php
And I get dozens of rejection emails.

If you need any more reading materials, I can also give you names
of hundreds of books on the subject, type “Game Design” in amazon.

Don’t be upset if you send my something once a year and it doesn’t interest me.
The world if full of uninteresting people, and they say a lot of uninteresting stuff.
I’m sure a lot of people don’t read my blog.
And those who do read my blog don’t find everything interesting, and i know it for a fact.

I hope some of you found this post interesting.

Funny Statstics

A comment i made in Astrid’s Blog lead to this funny conversation. I wanted to share it with you.

I her blog, Astrid complained about work, so I commented:
Title :Don’t Dispair
5 out of 8 of the blogs i read this week, including mine, had frustration posts about their high-tech jobs. The other 3 don’t work in high-tech.
I see a connection.

High-tech jobs are evil. pure evil.
just know that whatever your problems at work are, someone else is getting paid more money then you while doing less.

Astrid replied:
..

Your statistics on people complaining about their high tech jobs made me laugh so hard I almost got a nose bleed.

Well, while i’m glad my humor is having some effect, I don’t want to reak havoc.
In real life.
In game life, I do. i’m playing a game called “Evil Genius” and i’ll post a report on when i’m done with it. I can reak havoc there.

Also, an addition, one of the other 3 blog writers (non high-tech) also comlplained about her job…

Work

Rule no.1 of of blogging: DON’T WRITE ABOUT WORK.
Rule no.2 of blogging: no matter how angry you are, complaining about work in you blog IS NOT GOOD !
Rule no.3 of blogging: if you DO get so angry and frustrated from work, and since your blog is your main anger venting mechanism, and you end up writing about work in your blogs, be prepared to bear with the consequences.
Conclusion: I’m going to find a way implement a “Members only’ section.

First one of which is being tested here

Renaissance man

Would Leonardo De Vinci be as successful in the 20th century as he was in his time ?

Can anyone appreciate a true renaissance men nowadays ?

I’ll show you a man who knows art, and science, and can play several
musical instruments, who knows how to sculpt, and build models, and
draw, and know physics, and aerodynamics, and astronomy, and computer
programming, in several languages on 4 operating systems.
And the HR person who’ll interview him for a job in our modern society
will tell him he is unstable, and wild, and cannot hold a permanent
working place for more then two year, and that’s why he didn’t make it
to be a team leader, and we’re sorry we cannot find any suitable job in our organization
that meets your skills, and we wish you good luck in your way..
