Taiwan Day 3 – Saturday – 24/01/04

Idan Left In The morning before I woke up. Actually it was After I woke Up and went to bed again.

Still jet-lagged. I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t sleep. I went to the convenient store and bought some food at 6am. This time I got back without any special troubles, I listened to the Hitch Hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy Audio book I brought with me. I’m reading/Listening to “So Long and Thanks for the fish”. I’m almost half way through it by this time.
I even got to call Lee and we talked for a while so it was almost as if we went to bed together…

I was constantly awaken by firecrackers, celebrating Chinese new year. I would hear them, bang outside my window, run to my window, to find out I can’t actually see anything. Got depressed by that, and went to bed. This process happened at least 5 times during my sleeping attempt.

I Woke up Nauseated. Went to the office and then met Sterling there when he arrived. I organized some of my stuff, and installed utilities on the computer there. We talked for a while, Later we went to dinner with Bob and Phoebe. Sterling’s girl friend came along too. Since my stomach was a bit upset, so they took me to this place that has some special chicken soup. The soup was very thick, and even got crust when it cooled a bit. Probably because of some extra animal fat they add. There was all sort of nice dishes starting from fried rice, one of the kinds of sweet and sour chicken, shenchai, I think. There are many, many kinds of that thing, I had only tasted very few in Israel, Usually the one that looks like a Hanuka donut, with a piece of chicken inside. There was also something which is a mix between Iraqi Pita and Malawach. It was basically the same, but it was baked with green onions. Very nice.

Having almost nothing to do by myself that morning, other then sit in front of the computer, I have decided I wanted to by a tourist book. Something like Lonely Planet Taiwan. For my surprise that was the only English book in the tourist book section of a big 24hrs Barnes and Nobels style store not far from Bob’s house. In that same store which I spend about only 20 minutes in, I found some Futurama Comic book which isn’t available at Comikaza, and some Asterix comics which are cheaper here. Not by much. I later realized I was dividing the prices from NT (Taiwan Dollars) to NIS (Israelli Dollard) by 9 when it’s actually somewhere along 7.5 NT’s per shekel. Obviously that caused me to believe stuff was cheaper. Prices here are actually pretty much the same as in Israel.

Taiwan Day 2- Friday – 23/01/04

Sushi Breakfast with Idan and Bob

After those misadventures I had at the previous night, my let-lag and some lack of sleep I was awaken at 11:30. Me and Idan met Bob and we went to a Japanese restaurant to eat some brunch. The place was inside a big department store called Sogo. There were some dishes that were new to me. Then we hanged around in the toy section of the store Idan bought some toys for the folks back home. I saw a purple mace-windu light saber which wasn’t cheap. Toy prices in Taiwan aren’t really cheap ever since toys are now being manufactured in China and Taiwan went into the Hi-Tech. I hear computer eq is cheaper then Israel. But I think, not by much.

A night with Idan, Nelson, Sterling and Mark.
We went to one of the old night markets. A night market is something which I’m not sure if it’s unique to Taiwan. It’s a market, and only works starting from the afternoon, and is open most of the night. Taiwanese have very rich night life here, a lot of stuff are open late at night, if not 24hours. These night market are a fine example. I couldn’t tell the time, it was about 01:00 am it felt like it wasn’t any later then 21:00. The jet-lag didn’t help that feeling. We went through the old night market which is one of the things listed as an official Taipei tourist attraction. There were a lot of live see food like crabs and shrimps swimming in their tanks waiting for someone to buy, or eat them. I don’t really like seafood anyhow, and seeing those poor things only made it worse. They are also selling snakes there. And shark fins. Look at one of the pictures in my album that. The one with a sign saying “no picture taking”. Some animal right movements, as I was told, usually make a lot of fuss about this, and that’s why they don’t allow pictures taken. There were trinkets all around like small dragons, and all sort of Chinese stuffs. Idan bought his brother a knife.
We sat down and ate something Sterling and nelson called “beef everything”. They explained that it’s probably because it’s all beef, and they put every part of the beef in it. I wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be. Idan however found it too spicy and we ordered another one without the spicy pepper in it.
I also tried an oyster omlet. It’s a traditional dish, which is very popular in Taiwan, basically a fried egg with oysters and some sweet red sauce. I tried it but I don’t think I’d like to try it again. It was odd.

After the night market they took us for some more shopping, I bought some tea for Lee, and some Wassabi Peanuts to send home with Idan for Lee. I already written a later post telling about these Wassabi peanuts. They are very wonderfull.

After finishing shopping the guys asked as if we’d like to go to something they called a gentlemen’s club. Both me and Idan didn’t know what we were getting into, but we suspected what it might be by it’s name. We also knew that Ido and Eyal got the same offer and refused. Wussies. Me and Idan are adventurers. Explorers of distant worlds. Seeker of new life and new civilization. To boldly go where no one has gone before !
It wasn’t a topless strip bar like I suspected.
I was even more odd. And even more embarrassing.
You are shown into a small room. Table in the middle, couches, and a TV. Two girls enter the room, and they sign karaoke along with you, mostly in Chinese. Idan sang one song in Chinese. He sang in Hebrew though. Something like “I have no idea what I’m singing, but I know this guys don’t understand a word of what I’m singing” (I join in with idan) “except for you (me)”.
Some more girls came in, and I had a drinking contest with one of them, you play Dice against each other and the loser in each turn gets to drink. After loosing two drinks I replaced the beer I didn’t like with plain tomato juice. That girl, who’s name sounded like “potato” in Chinese, and thus we called her “potato” through the entire evening did however drink real beer. She lost, and obviously was very drunk.
Idan said that it’s something like every nerds dream. You get a first date with someone without trying, and without the embarrassment involved..
We did however though that it was very embarrassing. I kept thinking about Lee and what she might think. I love her so very much. Even after I told her everything about that place she was very understanding. I still kept feeling guilty even if I didn’t do anything. The worst thing I think is that the drunk girl, potato, wanted me to dance with her on the table, (after Idan danced with a girl that was attached to him). She took off some of my clothes. It very somewhat embarrassing in front of every one, but it’s ok. You usually get to see more of me in pool parties anyway…
Then I started falling asleep there, they were constantly singing karaoke all the time, each time a different drunken girl, and they started singing more slow and relaxing song.
Then all the girls left at once.
I understood that it’s very customary for business man to go to these places and I was told that actually a lot of business is done in these places. I can understand why. You get drunk and there are these girls putting you in a bit embarrassing situation, and you get to open up to your business partners.
It’s a bit demeaning for the girls. But I think strip clubs are more demeaning. And in this club every stayed fully dressed.
Besides me.
Hmm. Coming to think of it, it was a topless strip club. Only it was me who was topless.

P.S. I’m thinking my parents, or actually my mom, isn’t really going to like this club story. So don’t tell them. If you happen to be one of them, I can assure you, you can stop being a polish mom and stop worrying. I wore my “sveder” and my coat, and I didn’t get any SARS.

We went back, I stayed up a while talking with Idan about our weird experience, we talked about life, Majorem, the game, his flight back, and other stuff
We had a door effect. A door effect is that thing you get when you’re about to leave and you get stuck near the door and keep on talking for a few hours after you were suppose to go, and now you’re late already somewhere. Me and Idan have a long history of door effects. I think the largest one we had was when I first met Lee and couldn’t stop thinking about her, and I drove all the way to Idan, and back to my house along with him and we sat in the parking lot until 6am just talking about that before going to my house. I drove him back. I don’t think we even bothered going to my house. We just stayed at the car talking…
Idan was very proud he had a 3 hour door effect with Nelson.

I obviously called Lee before I went to sleep to explain all that. As I said she was more then just very understanding. I love her so very much.

Getting Ready

Starting tommorow i’m going away for three weeks. I’ll probably worn’t be able to post anything in that time.
That’s a shame too, because it happend so soon after I started writing my Blog.

I was busy today getting ready, still burning stuff I don’t want lost while i’m gone. Putting clothes in my backpack, and stuff.
I’ll probably be all like “what am i missing? what did I forget ?” tommorow, like I always do when i go away.
I’m sure gonna miss Lee, and everybody. A lot !

I had a small “fashla” with the gallery – 3 of the albums I put in, got deleted. I’ll put them in when I have time again. It’s frustrating, because each album takes an hour or more to add…

Yael, A friend of Lee and me came by today. We went to the supermarket and they bought themselves all the ingridients to make a nice ham`n`cheese sandwitch, In a big Gebeta bread, with tons of vegtables, lettuce, tomato and stuff. I saw it and was very impressed.
It’s usually cheaper to buy stuff at the supermarket and make it at home, rather then go to a resteraunt and order it.
However, some “Resteraunt” food taste better, and some “Home cooking” taste even better then that.

I’m sure noone in the world can argue about “Mom’s food”. Everyone likes their mom’s food.
Lee likes the food I make very much. She calls it “Dooshi food”. (Dooshi – that’s me -> Oded -> Dedoosh -> Dooshi).
I’ve heared my sister, who’s a COMPLETE vegetarian argue with my mom quiet often about the food she makes. But i’m sure she likes what she makes for her very much.

Other then that one, Ori, one of my friends from the “Thusday evening dinner club” (who is a vegeterian too) said he started reading my Blog too.
Everybody Welcome Ori. !!!
He said he’s missing some big stories, and I should probably write one, at least once a week.
I’ll try to write one, later, if I make it.
If not, I’ll probably have A LOT of big stories to tell when I get back…
I’m going to see some movie with Lee now.

Oh. A few small requests:
1. Please register.
2. Please comment on the stuff I write.
3. Since I have SO MUCH to say, I don’t know where to start. If you have any suggestions, or want to know something about me, please tell me.
Oh. I’ll put in a new Poll, Just for that.

Keep having fun whatever you do!

Oded.
Signing out.

Spell checkar

Bah !
Why isn’t there an embedded spell checkar for PHPNuke ?

I Guess there probably is, but i’m not feeling like looking for one.

Also, for some reason the “Newest Photo” block stopped working. I’ll put it (or an equivalent block) back on when it works..

You’ll have to rely on the random photos in the meanwhile.

Also Also, If you didn’t get the joke embedded in this post, shame on you.

Oded.

Slow Start

Hey.
This day started slow.
Took me about an hour to get out of bed. I just kept rolling in it.

I talked a bit with my friend Idan, who’s in Taiwan, installing their version of Ballerium – The game I used to work on.
But I don’t work at Majorem Anymore. It’s A long story. Most of my friend are already tired of hearing it. I’ll post it sometime in the near future for those who haven’t heard it.

I’m doing a long overdue backup of my computer, and burning stuff I download.
It’s a very tedious job. The burner is on the other computer, and I only have a 10MBit HUB, so it takes a while for the data to go from one computer to the other, then it takes time for each CD to actually burn, and then, I do a CD verification on my computer (I never trust CD’s. They are trecherous !).
so it takes a while. And it’s a bit boring. My computer isn’t resposive when i’m doing thfe verification.

I’m also adding new photos to the gallery in the background, but it takes time too !
Even though it uses the link to the picture instead of actually copying it, it still need to resize it, and make the thumbnail and stuff, and it takes time. I have SO MANY pictures, it will take me forever to add all them to the gallery…

Lee will be home soon, so we’ll do soemthing.

We’re are supposed to be going bowling later on in the evening with Amnon.

I Did It !!

Aha ! I’ve managed to hack the ‘Gallery’ code in such a way that it will use Symbolic links instead of copying over the pictures from the original directory !

Yippie for me, and for my hard drive space !!

Gonna watch some News Radio Now.
Oded.

New Feature: Embedded Photo Gallery !

Huh ! Finally !
I’ve installed and added the photo gallery.
You can access it from Hall Of Pictures there on the left.

I still have some tweaking to do with it.
Like making it make a symbolic link instead of copying the original picture.
Also, you can notice the “Random Picture” block on the right hand side of the page.
There’s also a block called “Newest Picture”, but it’s haveing problems, When clicking the picture the URL it generates is missing something. I’ll try to fix it and put it on.

But it’s 6am.
I’m Going to sleep now. Got to get up soon.
something like 5 hours…

Good night !
Oded.
